Be Smart, Be Safe

Staying safe requires being alert, informed, and responsible. This chapter teaches important safety rules for children — at home, on the road, online, and in emergencies. Being smart means thinking before you act.

Why Safety Matters

Accidents can happen anywhere. But most accidents can be prevented if we follow simple safety rules and stay aware of our surroundings.

Key Safety Areas

  • 1. Road Safety
  • Always walk on the footpath (pavement), not on the road.
  • Cross only at a zebra crossing and wait for the signal.
  • Look left, look right, look left again before crossing.
  • Never run across the road.
  • 2. Home Safety
  • Do not touch electrical switches with wet hands.
  • Never play with fire, matchsticks, or sharp objects.
  • If you smell gas, open windows and call an adult — do NOT switch on a light.
  • Keep medicines out of reach and never take medicine without asking an adult.
  • 3. Stranger Safety
  • Do not go anywhere with a stranger, even if they offer gifts.
  • Know your full name, parents' names, and phone number by heart.
  • If you feel unsafe, shout loudly and run to a trusted adult or a crowded place.
  • 4. Online Safety
  • Never share your name, address, school name, or photos with strangers online.
  • Tell a trusted adult if anything online makes you feel scared or uncomfortable.

Example 1

Riya sees a bright plug socket and wants to put her finger in it. The smart choice is to stay away — electrical sockets carry dangerous current that can cause a shock.

Example 2

A stranger offers Raj a ride home. Raj says "No, thank you," and walks to the nearest shopkeeper for help. This is the correct response.

Example 3

At a road crossing, the signal shows a red man (stop). Even though the road looks empty, Priya waits for the green man. Smart rule: never trust your eyes alone — follow the signal.

Example 4

Amit smells something strange from the kitchen pipe. He opens the window, does NOT switch anything on, and calls his mother. This prevents a gas explosion.

Example 5

A classmate asks Meera to share her home address in an online chat. Meera politely refuses and tells her mother. This is smart online behaviour.

Common mistakes

  • Thinking "it will not happen to me." Accidents do not warn us — following rules every single time is the only protection.
  • Running to look at something dangerous (a fire, an accident) out of curiosity. Move away and tell an adult instead.

Summary

Road safety, home safety, stranger safety, and online safety are the four pillars covered in this chapter. Being smart means knowing the rules; being safe means following them every time — not just sometimes.
