The Mystery of Food

Food gives our bodies energy and nutrients to grow, stay healthy, and do daily activities. Let us explore where food comes from and what happens to it inside our body.

  • Where does food come from?
  • Almost all food comes from plants or animals.
  • Plant sources: Rice, wheat, dal, vegetables, fruits, sugar
  • Animal sources: Milk, eggs, meat, fish, honey

How do plants make food?
Plants make their own food through photosynthesis — using sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to produce glucose. The green substance chlorophyll in leaves traps sunlight for this process. Plants are called producers.

  • Nutrients in food:
  • Carbohydrates: Give energy. Found in rice, wheat, potatoes.
  • Proteins: Help growth and repair. Found in dal, eggs, milk.
  • Fats: Store energy; keep us warm. Found in butter, oil, nuts.
  • Vitamins and Minerals: Protect health; strengthen bones. Found in fruits, vegetables, dairy.
  • Water: Carries nutrients and removes waste.

A meal with all nutrients in correct amounts is a balanced diet.

  • Digestion — food inside the body:
  • Digestion is the breaking down of food into usable parts.
  • Mouth: Teeth chew; saliva starts digesting starch.
  • Stomach: Acids and juices break food down further.
  • Small intestine: Nutrients are absorbed into the blood.
  • Large intestine: Water is absorbed; waste is removed.
Example 1

Rice and chapati (carbohydrates) give energy to run and study.

Example 2

Children who eat too little protein may not grow properly. Dal, eggs, and milk help build muscles.

Example 3

Oranges and lemons are rich in Vitamin C, protecting us from colds and helping wounds heal faster.

Example 4

Milk has calcium, which makes bones and teeth strong — important for growing children.

Example 5

Saliva in the mouth starts digesting starch the moment we begin chewing — digestion begins even before we swallow.

Common mistakes

Students think fats are always harmful. In right amounts, fats are essential — they store energy and help absorb certain vitamins. Too much fat is unhealthy, but some is needed daily.

Summary

Food from plants and animals contains carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals. Plants make food through photosynthesis. Digestion breaks food down so the body can use its nutrients. A balanced diet keeps us fit and healthy.
