Numbers are the foundation of mathematics. In Class 6, we extend our understanding of numbers beyond what we studied earlier, exploring large numbers, their representation, comparison, and estimation.
Place Value and Large Numbers
Every digit in a number has a place value. In the Indian system, we use ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten-thousands, lakhs, ten-lakhs, crores, and so on. In the International system, we use ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, millions, billions.
For example, 75,32,519 in the Indian system is read as seventy-five lakh thirty-two thousand five hundred nineteen.
Comparing Numbers
To compare two numbers: first compare the number of digits. More digits means a larger number. If digits are equal, compare from the leftmost digit.
Compare 4,57,832 and 4,57,928.
Both have 6 digits. The first four digits (4,57,8 and 4,57,9) differ at the fourth place. Since 9 > 8, we have 4,57,928 > 4,57,832.
Write 5,08,01,592 in words (Indian system).
Answer: Five crore eight lakh one thousand five hundred ninety-two.
Write the greatest 6-digit number using digits 3, 0, 7, 1, 8, 5 (each once).
Arrange in descending order: 8, 7, 5, 3, 1, 0 → 8,75,310.
Estimate 7,832 + 4,561 to the nearest thousand.
Round: 7,832 ≈ 8,000 and 4,561 ≈ 5,000. Estimated sum = 13,000.
A stadium has 3 sections with 14,527, 20,814, and 9,362 seats. Find the total and estimate to the nearest ten-thousand.
Total = 14,527 + 20,814 + 9,362 = 44,703.
Estimate: 10,000 + 20,000 + 10,000 = 40,000.
Using Roman numerals, write 2024.
2024 = 1000 + 1000 + 10 + 10 + 4 = MM + XX + IV = MMXXIV.
A book costs Rs 348. Estimate the cost of 52 such books to the nearest hundred.
348 ≈ 300, 52 ≈ 50. Estimated cost = 300 x 50 = Rs 15,000.
- Key Formulas and Facts
- 1 lakh = 1,00,000 (Indian); 1 million = 10,00,000 (International)
- 1 crore = 1,00,00,000; 1 billion = 1,00,00,00,000
- Roman numerals: I=1, V=5, X=10, L=50, C=100, D=500, M=1000
Common mistakes
- Confusing lakh (Indian) with million (International): 1 million = 10 lakhs.
- In Roman numerals, the same symbol cannot be repeated more than three times consecutively.
- When estimating, always state which place you are rounding to.
Summary
Large numbers use place value systems — Indian (lakhs, crores) or International (millions, billions). Comparison starts from the highest place. Estimation helps in quick mental calculations. Roman numerals use seven basic symbols.
