Picture Time

Chapter 3: Picture Time

Look around you! There are many things to see — trees, animals, houses, sky, and people. A picture can show us all of these things at once. In this chapter we learn to look at pictures carefully, name the things we see, and talk about them using simple words.

---

Key Concepts

Picture reading: When we look at a picture and describe what we see, we are "reading" the picture. This helps us learn new words.

Nouns (naming words): The names of things, people, animals, and places are called nouns. For example: tree, bird, house, boy, sun.

Describing words (Adjectives): Words that tell us more about a noun. For example: big tree, red ball, happy child, blue sky.

Prepositions: Small words that tell us WHERE things are. For example: in, on, under, near, above.

Sentences about pictures: When we describe a picture, we use a simple sentence: The cat is on the mat. The bird is in the tree.

Worked Examples

Example 1

Look at a picture of a park. Name three things you see.
Possible answers: tree, bench, flower. (Naming things we see = using nouns.)

Example 2

Describe the colour of the sky in the picture.
"The sky is blue." Blue is a describing word (adjective) for the sky.

Example 3

A picture shows a cat sitting on a box. Write one sentence about it.
"The cat is on the box." Here "on" tells us where the cat is — it is a preposition.

Example 4

A picture shows a big red ball near a small tree. What are the describing words?
Big and red describe the ball. Small describes the tree.

Example 5

Two children are playing under a tree. Where are the children?
"The children are under the tree." The word "under" tells us where.

---

Common mistakes

  • Do not just say "I see things." Always say the name of the thing: "I see a tree" or "I see a bird."
  • Do not forget to use describing words to make your sentences more interesting.

---

Summary

Pictures help us learn new words and talk about the world around us. We use naming words to say what we see, describing words to say what it looks like, and position words (prepositions) to say where things are. Looking at pictures and talking about them builds our English skills!
