In Class 3 you learned numbers up to 999. Now we move to bigger numbers — thousands! Numbers like the number of students in a big school (1,200), the distance from one city to another (4,500 km), or the price of a bicycle (Rs 3,750).
Place Value up to 4 Digits
Every digit in a number has a place value based on where it sits.
| Thousands (Th) | Hundreds (H) | Tens (T) | Ones (O) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 |
- The number above is 1,234 (one thousand two hundred thirty-four).
- 1 is in the Thousands place → value = 1,000
- 2 is in the Hundreds place → value = 200
- 3 is in the Tens place → value = 30
- 4 is in the Ones place → value = 4
- Total: 1,000 + 200 + 30 + 4 = 1,234
Expanded Form
Writing a number by showing the value of each digit:
3,567 = 3,000 + 500 + 60 + 7
Comparing Numbers
- 1.When comparing two 4-digit numbers:
- 2.Compare the thousands digit first.
- 3.If equal, compare hundreds, then tens, then ones.
What is the place value of 7 in 4,725?
7 is in the hundreds place. Place value = 700.
Write 5,308 in expanded form.
5,308 = 5,000 + 300 + 0 + 8
Compare 3,456 and 3,512. Which is greater?
Both have 3 in thousands. Compare hundreds: 4 vs 5. Since 5 > 4, 3,512 > 3,456.
Arrange in ascending order: 2,100 ; 1,985 ; 2,050
Ascending (smallest first): 1,985 ; 2,050 ; 2,100.
Write the number name for 6,047.
Six thousand and forty-seven.
Key Points
- 1,000 = ten hundreds = one thousand
- The smallest 4-digit number is 1,000.
- The largest 4-digit number is 9,999.
Common mistakes
- Students write 3,040 as "three thousand four" instead of "three thousand and forty." Remember the tens digit!
- Do NOT confuse place value with face value. Face value of 5 in 5,238 is 5; place value is 5,000.
Summary
4-digit numbers go up to 9,999. We use a place-value chart (Th, H, T, O) to understand each digit's value. Numbers can be written in expanded form or number-name form.
