Grouping and Sharing

Maths

Grouping and Sharing

Have you ever shared biscuits equally with your friends? That is what this chapter is all about — grouping (making equal groups) and sharing (giving equal amounts to everyone). These ideas help us understand multiplication and division.

Making Equal Groups (Multiplication)

  • When we make many equal groups, we can count them quickly by using multiplication.
  • 3 groups of 4 means 3 x 4 = 12.
  • The symbol for multiplication is x (or sometimes written as a dot).

Skip Counting

  • Skip counting means jumping by the same number each time.
  • Skip count by 2: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 ...
  • Skip count by 5: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 ...
  • Skip count by 10: 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 ...

Repeated Addition and Multiplication

3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12 is the same as 4 x 3 = 12.
Multiplication is a short way of writing repeated addition.

Sharing Equally (Division)

  • When we split a number into equal groups, we are doing division.
  • 12 chocolates shared equally among 4 friends: 12 / 4 = 3 each.
  • The symbol for division is / or ÷.
Example 1

5 children each have 3 pencils. How many pencils are there in all?
Step 1: 5 groups of 3 = 5 x 3 = 15.
Answer: There are 15 pencils in all.

Example 2

Skip count by 4 to find 4 x 6.
Step 1: 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24 (count 6 jumps).
Answer: 4 x 6 = 24.

Example 3

20 apples are packed equally into 4 boxes. How many apples are in each box?
Step 1: 20 / 4 = 5.
Answer: Each box has 5 apples.

Example 4

Write the repeated addition for 3 x 7.
Step 1: 3 x 7 means 7 added 3 times: 7 + 7 + 7 = 21.
Answer: 3 x 7 = 21.

Example 5

18 flowers are shared equally in 3 vases. How many flowers in each vase?
Step 1: 18 / 3 = 6.
Answer: Each vase gets 6 flowers.

Key Formulas

Key formulas

a x b = b added a times
a / b = splitting a into groups of b

Common mistakes

Remember that sharing must always be equal. If 10 sweets are shared among 3 children, they cannot be shared equally (10 / 3 is not a whole number). Look for numbers that divide evenly in these problems.

Summary

Grouping means making equal groups (multiplication). Sharing means dividing equally (division). Skip counting helps us multiply quickly. Repeated addition is another way to think about multiplication.
