Rani's Gift

Rani has a box of chocolates. She wants to share them with her friends. This chapter helps us understand measurement — finding out how long, how heavy, or how much of something there is — using simple ways.

What is Measurement?

When we want to know how long something is, we measure its length.
When we want to know how heavy something is, we measure its weight.
When we want to know how much a container can hold, we talk about its capacity.

Measuring Length

  • We can measure length using a ruler, hand-spans, or footsteps. The standard unit for length is the centimetre (cm) and metre (m).
  • 100 cm = 1 m

Measuring Weight

  • We use a balance or a weighing scale to find how heavy something is. Standard units are gram (g) and kilogram (kg).
  • 1000 g = 1 kg

Measuring Capacity (How Much a Container Holds)

  • Standard units are millilitre (mL) and litre (L).
  • 1000 mL = 1 L
Example 1

Rani has a ribbon 25 cm long and another ribbon 40 cm long. Which ribbon is longer?
Step 1: Compare 25 and 40.
Step 2: 40 is greater than 25.
Answer: The 40 cm ribbon is longer.

Example 2

A bag of apples weighs 2 kg and a bag of oranges weighs 1500 g. Which is heavier?
Step 1: Convert 2 kg to grams: 2 kg = 2000 g.
Step 2: Compare 2000 g and 1500 g.
Answer: The bag of apples is heavier.

Example 3

A bottle holds 500 mL of juice. How many bottles fill a 1 L jug?
Step 1: 1 L = 1000 mL.
Step 2: 1000 / 500 = 2 bottles.
Answer: 2 bottles are needed.

Example 4

Mia is 95 cm tall and Rani is 1 m tall. Who is taller?
Step 1: Convert 1 m to cm: 1 m = 100 cm.
Step 2: Compare 95 cm and 100 cm.
Answer: Rani is taller.

Example 5

A pencil is 12 cm long. A crayon is 8 cm long. How much longer is the pencil?
Step 1: Subtract: 12 - 8 = 4 cm.
Answer: The pencil is 4 cm longer.

Key Points to Remember

  • Length: cm, m (100 cm = 1 m)
  • Weight: g, kg (1000 g = 1 kg)
  • Capacity: mL, L (1000 mL = 1 L)
  • Always compare in the same units.

Common mistakes

Do not compare lengths and weights directly without converting to the same unit. Always check if you need to convert before comparing.

Summary

Measurement helps us know how long, how heavy, or how much. Use standard units like cm, m, g, kg, mL, and L to measure correctly.
