English

Chandrayaan

Chandrayaan means "Moon Vehicle" in Sanskrit (Chandra = Moon, Yaan = Vehicle). It is the name of India's exciting space mission to explore the Moon. India has sent spacecraft called Chandrayaan to study the Moon up close!

What the Lesson Teaches

This lesson introduces children to India's achievements in space exploration. It teaches new vocabulary about space, practises reading for information, and celebrates the work of Indian scientists and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

Key Facts About Chandrayaan

  • Chandrayaan-1 was launched in 2008. It was India's first mission to the Moon.
  • Chandrayaan-2 was launched in 2019. It had an orbiter, a lander, and a rover.
  • Chandrayaan-3 landed on the South Pole of the Moon in 2023, making India the first country to land near the lunar South Pole.
  • The spacecraft was built by scientists at ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation).

New Words

  • Spacecraft – a vehicle that travels in space
  • Orbit – to go around something in a curved path
  • Lander – the part of a spacecraft that lands on a surface
  • Rover – a small vehicle that moves on the surface of the Moon or a planet
  • Mission – an important journey or task with a goal
  • Scientist – a person who studies science and does experiments
Example 1

The spacecraft orbited the Moon before landing.
(Orbited means it went around the Moon in a circular path.)

Example 2

The rover moved across the lunar surface slowly.
(Lunar means "related to the Moon." The rover explored the Moon's ground.)

Example 3

Indian scientists worked very hard to build Chandrayaan.
(Scientists are the clever people who planned and built the mission.)

Example 4

The lander touched down softly on the South Pole of the Moon.
(Touched down means it landed gently on the surface.)

Example 5

Chandrayaan sent pictures and data back to Earth.
(Data means information collected by the spacecraft.)

Reading for Information (Non-Fiction)

  • This lesson is a non-fiction text — it gives us real facts. When reading non-fiction:
  • Look for headings that tell you the topic.
  • Look for key words in bold.
  • Read carefully to find facts (dates, names, places).

Common mistakes

  • Do not say "Chandrayaan go to Mars." It went to the Moon.
  • "ISRO" is the short form for Indian Space Research Organisation — always write it in capital letters.

Summary

Chandrayaan is India's proud Moon mission built by ISRO. We learn key space vocabulary (spacecraft, rover, orbit, lander), read a non-fiction passage for facts, and celebrate India's great achievement of landing near the South Pole of the Moon in 2023.
