Between Home and School

Every day, most children travel between their home and school. The journey to school is full of interesting things to see, hear, and notice! We pass buildings, roads, parks, trees, shops, and people along the way.

What Do We See on the Way to School?

  • On the way to school, we might see:
  • Roads and footpaths — where vehicles and people move
  • Trees and gardens — green plants and flowers
  • Shops — where things are sold
  • Traffic lights — red, yellow, and green lights that guide traffic
  • People — vendors, children, workers, and others

Direction Words (Prepositions of Place)

  • We use these words to say where things are on the way:
  • near, far, beside, on, under, across, next to, in front of, behind
Example 1

There is a big mango tree near our house. I pass it every morning.

Example 2

The bakery is next to the school gate. It smells wonderful!

Example 3

The traffic light is in front of the park.

Example 4

There is a garden across the road from our school.

Example 5

A puppy often sits under the bench outside the shop.

Road Safety Rules

  • On the way to school, we must follow road safety rules:
  • Always use the footpath when walking.
  • Look left, then right, then left again before crossing the road.
  • Cross only at the zebra crossing.
  • Obey the traffic lights — Red means STOP, Green means GO, Yellow means GET READY.
  • Do not run on the road.

Describing the Journey

We can describe our journey using action words and direction words:
"I walk along the footpath. I cross the road at the zebra crossing. I pass a big garden on my left. The school is at the end of the road."

Common mistakes

  • Do not say "I crossed the road without looking." Always look both sides before crossing!
  • Do not say "next the school" — say "next to the school."

Summary

The journey between home and school is full of things to observe. We use direction words like near, beside, next to, and across to describe what we see along the way. We must always follow road safety rules: use the footpath, look both ways, cross at the zebra crossing, and obey traffic lights.
