Holidays are full of maths! When we plan a trip to our grandparent's house, we use the calendar, count days and weeks, read time, and even work out distances and schedules. This chapter explores these ideas through fun holiday situations.
- The Calendar
- A year has 12 months.
- Some months have 30 days, some have 31, and February has 28 days (or 29 in a leap year).
- A week has 7 days: Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday.
- A month has about 4 weeks.
- Reading Time
- A clock has an hour hand (short) and a minute hand (long).
- The clock face is divided into 12 hours.
- 1 hour = 60 minutes; 1 day = 24 hours
- Simple Distance / Travel Planning
- If a journey takes 3 hours and we start at 9 o'clock, we reach at 12 o'clock (noon).
- Distance can be measured in kilometres (km).

Example 1: Days in a holiday
Priya went to her Nani Maa's house on 5th May and came back on 18th May. How many days was she away?
Days: 18 - 5 = 13 days
Example 2: Weeks and days
School holidays last 21 days. How many weeks is that?
21 ÷ 7 = 3 weeks
Example 3: Reading time
The clock shows 8:30. The train leaves at 9:00. How many minutes before departure?
9:00 - 8:30 = 30 minutes
Example 4: Calendar problem
If the 1st of a month is Monday, what day is the 15th?
15th = 1st + 14 days = 1 + 2 weeks = same day as 1st = Monday
Example 5: Journey time
Nani Maa lives 240 km away. The bus covers 80 km in one hour. How long does the journey take?
240 ÷ 80 = 3 hours

- Key Facts
- Months with 31 days: Jan, Mar, May, Jul, Aug, Oct, Dec
- Months with 30 days: Apr, Jun, Sep, Nov
- February: 28 days (29 in a leap year)
- "30 days hath September, April, June, and November" — a helpful rhyme!
Common mistakes
- Confusing the hour hand and minute hand — the short hand shows hours, the long hand shows minutes.
- Forgetting that a week has 7 days, not 5 (school days only!).
Summary
Calendars, clocks, and travel all involve maths. Counting days on a calendar, reading clock times, and calculating journey durations are all practical skills we use on every holiday!
