Exploring Our Neighbourhood

Our neighbourhood is full of interesting places and helpful people. When we step outside our home and look around carefully, we discover buildings, roads, open spaces, and people who serve our community every day.

  • Places in a Neighbourhood
  • Every neighbourhood has places that help us in daily life:
  • Market / Bazaar — where we buy food, clothes, and other things
  • School — where children learn
  • Hospital or Health Centre — where sick people get treatment
  • Park or Playground — where people exercise and children play
  • Place of Worship — temples, mosques, churches, gurudwaras
  • Post Office / Bank — for sending letters and saving money
  • People Who Help Us
  • Many people work in our neighbourhood to keep it running smoothly:
  • Doctor — treats people who are sick
  • Teacher — educates children
  • Police officer — keeps people safe
  • Shopkeeper — sells goods we need
  • Postman — delivers letters and parcels
  • Garbage collector — keeps the neighbourhood clean
Example 1

Kavya walks to school every morning. On the way she passes a fruit shop, a bank, and a small garden. Each of these is a part of her neighbourhood.

Example 2

When Arun's father got hurt, the family went to the nearest health centre in their neighbourhood. The doctor gave first aid and medicine. Health centres in neighbourhoods are very important.

Example 3

The postman, Ramesh, delivers letters to every house on the street each morning. Without him, important messages would not reach people.

Example 4

A new park was built in Sana's neighbourhood. Children play cricket and badminton there, and elders go for morning walks. Public spaces improve health and happiness.

Example 5

On Sunday, a neighbourhood cleaning drive was organised. Shopkeepers, residents, and school children all joined. They collected waste and planted saplings. Working together kept the area clean.

  • How to Explore Your Neighbourhood Safely
  • Always go with a trusted adult when exploring a new area.
  • Observe and note what you see — shops, roads, trees, buildings.
  • Do not litter; respect public spaces.
  • Be polite when talking to community helpers.

Common mistakes

Students often list only shops and schools as neighbourhood places. Remember that parks, places of worship, hospitals, and even the roads themselves are important parts of the neighbourhood. Also, every person with a job in your area is a community helper, not just the doctor or teacher.

Summary

Our neighbourhood has many important places (markets, schools, hospitals, parks) and helpful people (doctors, teachers, police, shopkeepers). Exploring our neighbourhood helps us understand how our community works and how everyone contributes to it.
