Happy and Healthy Living

Chapter 6: Happy and Healthy Living

Good health means feeling well in body AND mind. Being happy is just as important as being free from illness. In this chapter we learn what keeps us healthy and how our daily habits make a big difference.

Key Concepts

What is Health?
Health is not just the absence of disease. A healthy person has a fit body, a calm mind, and good relationships with others. Doctors often say health has three parts: physical, mental, and social.

  • Healthy Habits
  • Eat a balanced diet — include grains, vegetables, fruits, milk, pulses, and a little fat every day.
  • Drink clean water — always use boiled or filtered water to avoid stomach infections.
  • Exercise daily — play outdoors, walk, run, or do yoga for at least 30 minutes.
  • Sleep well — children need 9-10 hours of sleep every night so the body can grow and repair.
  • Keep clean — bath daily, wash hands before eating and after using the toilet, brush teeth twice a day.

Common Illnesses and Prevention
Diseases spread through dirty water (cholera, typhoid), mosquitoes (malaria, dengue), and coughs/sneezes (cold, flu). Vaccination protects us from many serious diseases like polio, measles, and tetanus.

Healthy Mind
Talking to friends and family, reading, playing, and helping others keeps our mind happy. Feeling sad or angry sometimes is normal; sharing feelings with a trusted adult helps.

Worked Examples

Example 1

Riya skips breakfast every morning. What problem might she face?
- Without breakfast her body has no energy from the night before.
- She may feel weak, unable to concentrate in class, and fall ill more often.
- Solution: Eat a nutritious breakfast — a glass of milk, a banana, and roti or bread is enough.

Example 2

Mohan washes his hands only before meals. Is that enough?
- Germs collect on hands after using the toilet, touching animals, or playing outside.
- Washing only before meals leaves those germs on the hands during other activities.
- Solution: Wash hands with soap and clean water: before eating, after using the toilet, after playing, and after touching animals.

Example 3

The water supply in Priya's colony was contaminated after floods. What should her family do?
- Boil drinking water for at least 5 minutes and let it cool, OR use water purification tablets.
- Store water in clean covered containers.
- This prevents water-borne diseases like typhoid and cholera.

Example 4

Arjun stays indoors all day playing video games. How does this affect his health?
- Lack of physical activity weakens muscles and may lead to obesity.
- Screen time for too long strains the eyes.
- He misses social play, which can make him feel lonely.
- Solution: Balance — play outdoors for at least 30 minutes daily.

Example 5

Which foods give us energy, which help us grow, and which protect us from disease?
- Energy foods: Rice, wheat, maize (carbohydrates); butter, oil (fats).
- Body-building foods: Milk, eggs, fish, dal, pulses (proteins).
- Protective foods: Fruits and vegetables (vitamins and minerals).

Common mistakes

  • Students confuse "healthy food" with only fruits and vegetables. Remember, a balanced diet includes all food groups.
  • Vaccines do NOT cause the disease — they train the body to fight it.

Summary

Happy and healthy living needs a balanced diet, clean water, daily exercise, enough sleep, good hygiene, and a cheerful mind. Small daily habits protect us from many diseases and help us grow strong.
