Growing up with Nature

All living things — plants, animals, and humans — grow and change over time. In this chapter we learn about how living things grow, what they need to grow, and how nature is connected to our growing up.

Growth in Plants
A plant grows from a seed. The stages of a plant's life are:
Seed → Seedling → Young plant → Mature plant → Produces flowers and fruits → Seeds are formed again.

Plants need sunlight, water, air (carbon dioxide), and nutrients from the soil to grow. Without any one of these, a plant cannot grow well.

  • Growth in Animals
  • Animals also go through life stages. For example:
  • A hen lays an egg → the egg hatches into a chick → the chick grows into a hen or rooster.
  • A frog begins as an eggtadpolefrogletadult frog.
  • A butterfly starts as an eggcaterpillarpupa (cocoon)butterfly.

This process of change in stages is called metamorphosis in insects and frogs.

Growth in Humans
Humans also grow through stages:
Baby → Toddler → Child → Teenager → Adult → Old age.

As we grow, our body changes — we get taller, our teeth change (baby teeth fall and permanent teeth grow), and we learn new skills.

  • What Helps Living Things Grow?
  • Food — provides energy and materials for growth.
  • Water — essential for all life processes.
  • Sunlight — helps plants make food; gives humans vitamin D.
  • Clean air — needed for breathing.
  • Care and love — especially important for young animals and children.
Example 1

Dia planted a bean seed in a pot with soil. She watered it daily and kept it near a window. After a week, a tiny seedling appeared. This shows that a seed needs water, soil, and sunlight to sprout.

Example 2

Rajan observed a pond near his house. Over a few weeks he noticed frog eggs turning into tadpoles with tails, and then the tadpoles slowly growing legs and losing their tails to become adult frogs.

Example 3

A butterfly lays tiny eggs on a leaf. After some days, a caterpillar hatches and eats leaves to grow bigger. It then forms a cocoon (pupa). Inside the cocoon, amazing changes happen, and a butterfly emerges.

Example 4

A baby cannot walk or talk when born. But with care, food, and time, the baby grows into a toddler who walks and speaks. By age 4, children can run, draw, and tell stories. Growth is gradual.

Example 5

A mango seed planted in the ground takes several years to grow into a tree that gives fruits. Some living things take longer to grow than others.

Common mistakes

Students sometimes think only humans "grow up." All living things — plants, insects, frogs, birds — grow and change. Also, a caterpillar and a butterfly are different stages of the SAME animal, not two different animals.

Summary

All living things grow from a small beginning and pass through several stages. Plants grow from seeds; animals and insects go through various life stages. Growth requires food, water, air, sunlight, and care. Understanding growth helps us appreciate and protect life around us.
