We do not live alone. Every person — whether in a city, town, or village — lives as part of a family and a community. In this chapter we learn why living together matters and how people help each other.
What is a Family?
A family is a group of people who are related to each other and live together. Families can be small (just parents and children) or large (grandparents, uncles, aunts, and cousins all sharing a home). Every member of the family has a role.
What is a Neighbourhood?
The area around your home — the streets, shops, parks, and houses nearby — is your neighbourhood. The people who live close to you are your neighbours. Neighbours help each other during festivals, emergencies, and everyday tasks.
Riya lives with her mother, father, and grandmother. Her grandmother cooks, her father goes to work, her mother teaches at a school, and Riya helps tidy the house. Each person contributes to the family.
During a heavy rain, a tree fell on the road near Arjun's house. His neighbours worked together to clear the road so cars could pass. This shows community cooperation.
In a village, farmers often help each other during harvest time. One farmer's family helps another, and then that family returns the help. This is called mutual help.
In a city apartment building, residents share a common garden. They take turns watering the plants. Sharing responsibilities keeps the community clean and happy.
During Diwali, families in a neighbourhood come together to decorate the street with lights and diyas. Festivals bring communities closer.
- Why Do We Need Each Other?
- For safety — neighbours look out for each other.
- For help — we cannot do everything alone.
- For happiness — celebrations and friendships make life joyful.
- For learning — elders in the family and community pass on wisdom.
Common mistakes
Students sometimes think "family" only means parents and children. Remember, a family can include grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins too. Also, a neighbourhood is not just buildings — it is the people in those buildings who form a community.
Summary
Living together in families and communities helps us meet our needs, stay safe, and enjoy life. Every person has a role to play, and helping each other makes the community strong.
