Celebrating Festivals

What is a festival?
A festival is a special day or time when people celebrate together. Festivals are full of joy, music, food, and colour. In India, people of many different religions and regions celebrate different festivals. Every festival has its own meaning and traditions.

  • Some festivals we celebrate
  • Diwali — the festival of lights. People light diyas, burst crackers, share sweets, and clean their homes.
  • Holi — the festival of colours. People throw coloured powder and water at each other and celebrate the arrival of spring.
  • Eid — a festival celebrated by Muslims after a month of fasting. People offer prayers, share delicious food called sevaiyan, and visit relatives.
  • Christmas — celebrated by Christians on 25 December. People decorate trees, exchange gifts, and sing carols.
  • Onam — a harvest festival from Kerala. People make flower rangoli (Pookalam) and eat a grand feast on a banana leaf.
  • Pongal — celebrated in Tamil Nadu during the harvest season. Sweet rice called Pongal is cooked in clay pots.
  • Navratri and Durga Puja — nine days of worship and dance (Garba), celebrated across India.
  • Baisakhi — a harvest festival of Punjab, celebrated with bhangra dance.

How do festivals make us feel?
Festivals bring happiness. We wear new clothes, visit family, light lamps, decorate our homes, prepare special foods, and thank nature for its gifts.

Festivals and togetherness
Festivals teach us to share joy with everyone — neighbours, friends, and people from different backgrounds. When we celebrate together, we learn about each other and become closer.

Common mistakes
