Making Things

People make things every day. The clothes we wear, the pots we cook in, the toys we play with — all of these are made by someone. Making things is a skill, and the people who make them work hard to help us.

Why Do People Make Things?

  • People make things to meet their daily needs:
  • We need clothes to keep us warm and protected.
  • We need pots and pans to cook our food.
  • We need furniture like tables and chairs to sit and study.
  • We need tools to do our work.

Materials Used to Make Things

  • To make anything, we need materials. Here are some examples:
  • Potter — uses wet clay (mud) to make pots, cups, and bowls. After shaping, the clay is dried and heated in a fire (kiln) to make it hard.
  • Carpenter — uses wood and tools to make tables, chairs, doors, and cupboards.
  • Weaver — uses threads and a loom (a special machine) to make cloth for our clothes.
  • Blacksmith — uses metal and fire to shape tools, locks, and iron objects.
  • Tailor — uses cloth, needle, and thread to stitch clothes.

Everyday Things and How They Are Made

  1. 1.A clay pot:
  2. 2.The potter takes soft, wet clay.
  3. 3.She shapes it on a wheel.
  4. 4.She dries it in the sun.
  5. 5.She puts it in a kiln (fire oven) to make it hard and strong.
  1. 1.A wooden chair:
  2. 2.The carpenter cuts wood into the right shapes.
  3. 3.She joins the pieces using nails or glue.
  4. 4.She sands it smooth.
  5. 5.She may paint or polish it.

Making Things at Home

  • We also make things at home:
  • Cooking food — putting together ingredients to make meals.
  • Drawing and painting — using colours and paper to make art.
  • Making crafts — folding paper (origami), stitching, or building with blocks.

When we make something with our own hands, it is called a handmade thing. Handmade things are special because a person's skill and effort go into making each one.

Respecting the People Who Make Things

The people who make things for us are skilled workers. A potter, carpenter, weaver, blacksmith, or tailor has learned their skill through years of practice. We should respect and value their hard work.

Common mistakes

Children sometimes think that things are made quickly and easily. In reality, making a good pot, a piece of furniture, or a cloth garment takes time, skill, and effort. Also, students often forget that cooking is also a form of making things.

Summary

  • People make things to meet their daily needs for food, shelter, clothing, and tools.
  • Different workers use different materials and skills: potter (clay), carpenter (wood), weaver (thread), tailor (cloth).
  • Handmade things are made with personal skill and care.
  • We should respect and value the people who make things for us.
