Family and Friends

Who is a family?
A family is a group of people who live together, love each other, and take care of one another. Your mother, father, brothers, sisters, and grandparents are all part of your family. Some families are big and some are small — every family is special.

  • Members of the family
  • Mother looks after the home and takes care of everyone.
  • Father goes to work and helps at home too.
  • Grandparents (Dadi, Dadu / Nani, Nanu) tell us stories and guide us.
  • Brothers and sisters are our first playmates and friends.

What does a family do together?
Families eat meals together, celebrate festivals, help each other when someone is sick, and share happy and sad times. Every member of the family has a role to play.

Who are friends?
Friends are people we like to spend time with outside our family. We meet friends at school, in our neighbourhood, and at play. A good friend shares, listens, and is kind.

  • How to be a good friend
  • Share your toys and food.
  • Listen when your friend is talking.
  • Help a friend who is feeling sad.
  • Say sorry if you make a mistake.

Nuclear and joint families
A nuclear family has parents and children only. A joint family has grandparents, uncles, aunts, and cousins living together. Both kinds of families are wonderful.

Common mistakes

Children often think that only people who look like them can be friends. Remember, friends can come from different places, speak different languages, and still be very good friends.

Summary

A family gives us love, food, shelter, and care. Friends make our days happy and fun. Loving our family and being kind to friends are the two most important things we can do.
