Living things need each other
Plants and animals are both living things. They need each other to survive. This is one of nature's most important lessons. No plant or animal can live completely alone — all living things are connected.
- How do animals depend on plants?
- Animals eat plants for food. Cows eat grass, rabbits eat leaves, and parrots eat fruits and seeds.
- Trees provide shelter and homes for animals. Birds build nests in trees. Squirrels live in holes in tree trunks.
- Bees collect nectar from flowers to make honey. In doing so, they help flowers make seeds (pollination).
- Caterpillars and insects live on plant leaves.
- How do plants depend on animals?
- Animals like bees, butterflies, and birds carry pollen from one flower to another. This helps plants make seeds and fruits. This is called pollination.
- Animals eat fruits and drop seeds far away in different places. This helps new plants grow in new areas. This is called seed dispersal.
- When animals die, their bodies mix with the soil and make it richer, helping plants grow better.
Living together — an example
Think of a mango tree. Birds sit on its branches. Squirrels eat its fruits and drop seeds that grow into new trees. Bees visit its flowers and help make more mangoes. The tree gives shade to animals resting below. This is a perfect example of plants and animals living together and helping each other.
What happens when this balance is broken?
If all the bees disappear, flowers cannot be pollinated and fruits will not grow. If all the trees are cut down, birds and squirrels lose their homes and food. This shows why we must protect both plants and animals.
Common mistakes
Children sometimes think that only big animals like tigers and elephants depend on plants. But tiny insects, worms, and birds also depend on plants every day.
Summary
Plants and animals need each other to survive. Animals eat plants and help them with pollination and seed dispersal. Plants provide food, shelter, and oxygen to animals. Protecting both plants and animals keeps our world healthy and balanced.
