India is a land of many cultures, languages, and religions. Because of this, we celebrate a large number of festivals throughout the year. Festivals bring families and communities together and fill our lives with joy and colour.
What is a Festival?
- A festival is a special day or time when people celebrate something important — a harvest, a religious event, a new season, or a historical event. Festivals usually involve:
- Special food and sweets
- New clothes
- Prayers and rituals
- Games, music, and dance
- Giving gifts and visiting relatives
Some Important Festivals of India
Diwali — the Festival of Lights. People light oil lamps called diyas, burst crackers, exchange sweets, and pray to Goddess Lakshmi. It marks the victory of good over evil.
Holi — the Festival of Colours. People throw coloured powder and water on each other. It celebrates the arrival of spring and the story of Prahlad and Holika.
Eid — Muslims celebrate Eid after a month of fasting called Ramzan. Families pray together, share sweets like sevai, and give gifts.
Christmas — Christians celebrate the birthday of Jesus Christ on 25 December. People decorate Christmas trees, sing carols, and exchange gifts.
Pongal / Makar Sankranti / Lohri — harvest festivals celebrated in different parts of India to thank nature for a good crop.
Navratri and Dussehra — nine days of dance and prayers followed by the celebration of Lord Rama's victory over Ravana.
How Festivals Unite Us
Even though different communities have different festivals, we all celebrate with joy. In India, people of all religions often visit their neighbours and friends during festivals and share food. This shows respect and love for each other.
Ananya's family is Hindu. During Eid, her Muslim neighbour Rauf's family sends them sevai. During Diwali, Ananya's family sends sweets to Rauf's family. This is the spirit of unity.
Common mistakes
Students sometimes think festivals belong only to one community and others cannot participate. In India, people of all backgrounds join in each other's celebrations. Respecting all festivals is an important value.
