Food We Eat

Every day we eat different kinds of food. Food gives our body the energy to play, study, grow, and stay healthy. Without food, our body cannot work properly. Choosing the right food keeps us strong and happy.

Where Does Food Come From?

Our food comes from two main places:

  • Plants — fruits, vegetables, grains, and pulses grow on plants. Rice, wheat, dal, tomatoes, bananas, and spinach all come from plants.
  • Animals — milk, eggs, meat, and fish come from animals. Cows give us milk, hens give us eggs, and fish is caught from rivers and seas.

Some foods come from both — for example, honey is made by bees (animals) using nectar from flowers (plants).

Types of Food

We can sort food into groups based on what they do for our body:

  • 1. Energy-giving foods: These give us strength to work and play.
  • Examples: rice, wheat, bread, potatoes, sugar, oil
  • 2. Body-building foods: These help our body grow and repair itself.
  • Examples: milk, eggs, dal, fish, cheese, meat
  • 3. Protective foods: These keep us healthy and protect us from getting sick.
  • Examples: fruits and vegetables like oranges, carrots, spinach, and tomatoes

Eating Habits

A balanced meal includes food from all three groups. Eating the same food every day is not enough — we need variety to get all the goodness our body needs.

  • Good eating habits:
  • Wash your hands before eating
  • Wash fruits and vegetables before eating them
  • Eat at regular times — breakfast, lunch, and dinner
  • Do not skip breakfast — it gives energy for the whole morning
  • Drink enough water with and between meals

Common mistakes

Many children think only sweet things like chocolates and chips are tasty and skip vegetables and dal. However, these junk foods have very little nutrition and too much sugar and salt which can harm the body. Also, skipping breakfast makes it hard to concentrate in school.
