Getting to Know Plants

Look around you — plants are everywhere! In your garden, on roadsides, in pots on balconies, in fields, and in forests. Plants are living things that make their own food using sunlight, water, and air.

Parts of a Plant

Every plant has different parts, and each part has a special job:

  • Roots — grow underground. They hold the plant in the soil and absorb water and minerals from the ground.
  • Stem — the main body of the plant above the ground. It carries water and food to all parts of the plant. It also supports the plant.
  • Leaves — flat and green. They make food for the plant using sunlight, water, and air. This process is called photosynthesis.
  • Flower — the colourful part of the plant. Flowers help in making seeds. They attract bees and butterflies.
  • Fruit — grows from the flower. Fruits protect the seeds inside them. Many fruits are eaten by people and animals.
  • Seeds — found inside fruits. When planted in soil with water and sunlight, seeds grow into new plants.

Types of Plants

  • Plants come in many sizes and types:
  • Trees — very tall and have a thick, woody trunk. Examples: mango, banyan, neem.
  • Shrubs — medium-sized plants with many branches from near the base. Examples: rose, hibiscus, mehendi.
  • Herbs — small, soft-stemmed plants. Examples: tulsi, mint, coriander.
  • Creepers — plants that grow along the ground. Examples: pumpkin, watermelon.
  • Climbers — plants that climb up walls or other plants using thin stems called tendrils. Examples: money plant, grapevine, beanstalk.

What Plants Need to Grow

  1. 1.Plants need four things to grow well:
  2. 2.Sunlight — for making food
  3. 3.Water — for absorbing minerals and staying alive
  4. 4.Soil — to hold the roots and provide minerals
  5. 5.Air — for the process of making food
Example

If you keep a plant in a dark room with no sunlight, its leaves will turn yellow and it will slowly die. This shows that sunlight is essential for plants.

Common mistakes

Children sometimes think that only leaves or roots are important. In fact, every part of a plant has a special role. Also, not all plants grow from seeds — some grow from cuttings (like roses) or bulbs (like onions).

Summary

  • Plants are living things with parts: roots, stem, leaves, flowers, fruits, and seeds.
  • Each part has a specific job to keep the plant alive and help it reproduce.
  • Plants are classified as trees, shrubs, herbs, creepers, and climbers.
  • Plants need sunlight, water, soil, and air to grow.
