Family and Friends

We all live with people who love us and care for us. These people make up our family. A family is a group of people who live together, share their lives, and help each other.

Types of Families

  • Families can be small or large.
  • A small family (also called a nuclear family) has a mother, father, and one or two children.
  • A large family (also called a joint family) has grandparents, parents, uncles, aunts, and many cousins all living together.

Both types of families are equally special and important.

Members of a Family

  • Mother — she takes care of the home and family.
  • Father — he goes to work and provides for the family.
  • Grandparents — the parents of your mother or father. They share stories and wisdom.
  • Siblings — your brothers and sisters.
  • Uncles and Aunts — brothers and sisters of your parents.
  • Cousins — children of your uncles and aunts.

How Families Help Each Other

Every member of a family has a role. Parents cook food, earn money, and keep us safe. Children help by keeping their rooms tidy and being responsible. Grandparents share their experience and love. When someone is sick, the whole family helps them get better.

Example

When Meera was sick, her mother gave her medicine, her father brought her soup, and her grandmother sat beside her. This shows how a family works together.

Friends

  • Friends are people we like and enjoy playing with. We find friends at school, in our neighbourhood, and at play. A good friend is someone who:
  • Is kind and gentle
  • Shares things happily
  • Helps when you are sad or hurt
  • Tells the truth
Example

Raju shared his pencils with his friend Sita when she forgot hers. That is what a caring friend does.

Common mistakes

Children sometimes think only relatives can be family, or that new classmates cannot be real friends. Families can be formed in many ways, and friendships can be built quickly through kindness and trust.
