Look around you. You will see many, many things — chairs, tables, books, toys, pots, clothes, windows, and so much more. All the things around us are made from different materials. Learning about these materials helps us understand our world better.
Natural and Man-Made Things
Things can be sorted into two big groups:
- 1. Natural things — found in nature, not made by humans
- Examples: stones, sand, wood (from trees), leaves, cotton (from cotton plant), wool (from sheep), clay
- 2. Man-made things — made by people using materials
- Examples: plastic bottles, glass windows, steel spoons, paper, brick walls, rubber tyres
Even man-made things use natural materials. Glass is made from sand. Paper is made from wood. Steel is made from iron ore from the earth.
Common Materials and Their Properties
Every material has special properties — features that tell us what it is like and what it is good for.
- Wood:
- Hard and strong; can be cut and shaped
- Used for: furniture (chairs, tables), doors, windows
- Metal (like steel and iron):
- Hard, shiny, and strong; conducts heat
- Used for: cooking pots, spoons, bridges, vehicles
- Plastic:
- Light, can be moulded into many shapes; does not rust
- Used for: bottles, bags, toys, pipes
- Glass:
- Transparent (we can see through it); smooth and hard; breaks easily
- Used for: windows, mirrors, spectacles, bottles
- Cloth/Fabric:
- Soft, flexible; can be woven from cotton, wool, silk, or synthetic fibres
- Used for: clothes, curtains, bedsheets
- Clay/Mud:
- Soft when wet, hard when baked; found in the ground
- Used for: pots, toys, bricks
Grouping Things by Property
- We can sort things by:
- Colour (red, blue, yellow)
- Shape (round, square, long)
- Size (big, small, tall, short)
- Material (wood, metal, plastic, glass)
- Use (for eating, for writing, for sleeping)
Common mistakes
Students sometimes think all shiny things are metal or all hard things are stone. Glass is hard but transparent. Plastic can be hard or soft but is lighter than metal. Always look at all the properties together before deciding what a material is.
Summary
- Things around us are made from natural or man-made materials.
- Common materials include wood, metal, plastic, glass, cloth, and clay.
- Each material has properties like hardness, transparency, flexibility, and weight.
- We can sort and group things by their colour, shape, size, material, or use.
- Man-made things are often made FROM natural materials.
