Family and Friends

Every person in the world belongs to a family. A family is a group of people who live together, love each other, and help each other every day. Families come in many shapes and sizes, and every family is special.

What is a Family?

A family usually has parents, children, grandparents, uncles, aunts, and cousins. Some families are small — just a mother, father, and one or two children. Some families are big — with many relatives all living close together.

  • Members of a family:
  • Mother and Father — they take care of the children and the home.
  • Grandparents — the parents of your mother or father.
  • Siblings — your brothers and sisters.
  • Relatives — uncles, aunts, and cousins who are part of your extended family.

How Family Members Help Each Other

Family members share responsibilities. Parents go to work and earn money. Children help with small tasks like keeping their room tidy. Grandparents often tell stories and share wisdom. Everyone in a family cares for the others when they are sick or sad.

Example 1

Riya's mother cooks food. Her father brings groceries. Riya sets the table. They are all working together as a family.

Example 2

When Arjun had a fever, his grandmother made him soup and his sister read him a story. This shows how family members support each other.

Example 3

Mia's grandfather teaches her how to garden every weekend. Learning from elders is an important part of family life.

Friends

Friends are people we like and enjoy spending time with. We make friends at school, in our neighbourhood, and during activities. A good friend is kind, honest, and helpful.

Example 4

Sana shares her lunch with her friend Dev when Dev forgets his tiffin box. That is what good friends do — they share and care.

Example 5

When Priya felt sad because she missed her pet, her friend Neha stayed with her and made her feel better. Good friends help us feel happy.

Common mistakes

Students sometimes think only people who look alike can be in the same family, or that friends must live next door. Families can include adopted members, and friends can live far away and still care for each other.

Summary

  • A family is a group of people who love and support each other.
  • Families can be small (nuclear) or large (joint/extended).
  • Friends are people we choose to spend time with and who treat us with kindness.
