Staying Healthy and Happy

Being healthy means your body is working well and you feel good. Being happy means your mind feels good too. Health is not just about the body — our feelings and friendships matter just as much.

Good Health Habits

  • These simple habits keep us healthy:
  • Eat a balanced diet — include all food groups
  • Drink clean water — at least 6–8 glasses a day
  • Exercise regularly — play, run, cycle, swim
  • Get enough sleep — children need about 9–10 hours each night
  • Keep clean — bathe daily, brush teeth twice a day, cut nails regularly
  • Wash hands — before eating and after using the toilet

Personal Hygiene

Hygiene means keeping ourselves clean. Germs are tiny living things that we cannot see. They enter our body through dirty hands, food, or water and make us ill. Good hygiene stops germs from spreading.

  1. 1.Steps for washing hands correctly:
  2. 2.Wet hands with water
  3. 3.Apply soap
  4. 4.Rub palms, back of hands, between fingers for at least 20 seconds
  5. 5.Rinse well
  6. 6.Dry with a clean cloth or tissue

Exercise and Rest

Exercise makes our muscles strong, keeps our heart healthy, and lifts our mood. Even playing games like kabaddi, football, or skipping is great exercise. After exercise, our body needs rest and sleep to repair and grow.

Visiting the Doctor

We should go to the doctor for a regular health check-up even when we are not sick. If we feel ill — fever, cold, stomach pain — we must see a doctor and take medicine on time.

Being Happy

Happiness comes from spending time with family and friends, helping others, being kind, and doing things we enjoy. A happy mind helps keep the body healthy too.

Example 1

Arun wakes up, brushes his teeth, and washes his face before breakfast. This morning routine keeps germs away and starts the day in a healthy way.

Example 2

Meena practises yoga and plays badminton every evening. Her body is strong and she rarely falls sick because exercise builds her immune system.

Example 3

After playing in the garden, Rohan washes his hands with soap before eating his snack. This simple habit prevents the entry of germs into his body.

Example 4

Siya sleeps by 9 pm every night and wakes up fresh. Her brain and body have time to rest, repair, and get ready for a new day of learning.

Example 5

When Ravi was sad because he lost a game, his friend patted his back and said kind words. Ravi felt better. Good friendships support our mental health.

Common mistakes

Children often skip handwashing if their hands look clean. Remember — germs are invisible. Always wash hands with soap. Also, watching too much TV or using a phone before bed disturbs sleep. Switch off screens at least 30 minutes before sleeping.

Summary

Staying healthy means eating well, drinking clean water, exercising, sleeping enough, and keeping clean. Good habits like washing hands protect us from germs. Our feelings and friendships are part of being truly healthy and happy.
