Making Things

Everything we use — our clothes, books, pots, and toys — was made by someone. Making things is called crafting, manufacturing, or a craft skill. People have been making things for thousands of years, first by hand and now also using machines.

How Are Things Made?

Things can be made in two main ways:

1. By hand (handmade): Skilled people use their hands and simple tools to make objects one at a time. Examples: a potter making a clay pot, a weaver making cloth, a carpenter making a chair.

2. By machine (machine-made): Factories use big machines to make thousands of identical objects quickly. Examples: plastic bottles, printed books, factory-made cloth.

Common Crafts and Craftspeople

| Craft | Craftsperson | What They Make |
|---|---|---|
| Pottery | Potter | Pots, plates, lamps from clay |
| Weaving | Weaver | Cloth, sarees, carpets |
| Carpentry | Carpenter | Furniture, doors, windows |
| Blacksmithing | Blacksmith | Tools, knives, metal objects |
| Basket weaving | Basket weaver | Baskets, mats from bamboo |
| Tailoring | Tailor | Clothes from cloth |

Steps in Making Something

  1. 1.Let us see how a clay pot is made:
  2. 2.Collect good quality clay from the ground
  3. 3.Knead (press and fold) the clay to remove air bubbles
  4. 4.Shape the clay on a potter's wheel
  5. 5.Dry the shaped pot in the sun
  6. 6.Bake it in a kiln (a special oven) to make it hard
  7. 7.Decorate with paints and designs

Tools Help Us Make Things

  • A tool is a device that helps us do a job more easily. Examples:
  • Hammer and chisel — for wood or stone
  • Potter's wheel — for making clay pots
  • Needle and thread — for sewing
  • Loom — for weaving cloth
  • Saw — for cutting wood
Example 1

A potter collects clay, kneads it, spins it on the wheel, shapes a diya (lamp), and bakes it in a kiln. The diya is now hard and ready to use on Diwali.

Example 2

A weaver sits at a loom and passes threads over and under each other in a pattern. After many hours, a beautiful piece of cloth is ready.

Example 3

A carpenter measures a piece of wood with a ruler, marks it, cuts it with a saw, and joins pieces with nails and glue to make a bookshelf.

Example 4

A tailor measures a customer, cuts cloth with scissors, and sews the pieces together with a needle and thread (or sewing machine) to make a shirt.

Example 5

In a factory, a machine can make 500 plastic bottles in one hour. Each bottle is identical. A human craftsperson making bottles by hand would take much longer.

Common mistakes

Students sometimes think handmade things are "worse" than machine-made ones. In fact, handmade crafts are often of higher quality and carry the skill and love of the craftsperson. Both types have their value.

Summary

Things are made either by hand (handmade) or by machines (machine-made). Craftspeople like potters, weavers, carpenters, and tailors use special skills and tools to make objects. Making something involves steps: collecting materials, shaping, and finishing. Craftspeople play an important role in our society.
