Water is one of the most important things on Earth. Every living thing — plants, animals, and people — needs water to survive. That is why water is called a precious gift of nature.
Where Do We Get Water?
- We get water from many places:
- Rain — the most important source
- Rivers and lakes — store rainwater
- Ponds and wells — people collect water from these
- Taps at home — water comes through pipes from a river or tank
- Hand pumps — bring underground water up
Uses of Water
We use water for drinking, cooking, bathing, washing clothes, watering plants, and for animals to drink. Farmers use a lot of water to grow crops.
Water Must Be Clean
We should always drink clean and safe water. Dirty water can make us very sick. We can purify water by boiling it or using a water filter.
Save Water!
- Water is limited. We must not waste it. Simple ways to save water:
- Close the tap when not using it
- Fix leaking taps
- Use a bucket instead of a running pipe when bathing
- Water plants early in the morning
Riya leaves the tap running while brushing her teeth. How much water does she waste? A running tap wastes about 6 litres every minute. By turning off the tap she saves all that water.
A farmer waters his field using a pipe that sprays water. This is called drip irrigation and saves a lot of water compared to flooding the whole field.
Mohan boils drinking water every day before drinking. He is making sure the water is free from germs and safe to drink.
After washing vegetables, Priya pours the leftover water on her plants. She is reusing water wisely.
The school has a leaking tap in the garden. The children report it to the teacher so it gets fixed. Even a small leak wastes hundreds of litres every day.
Common mistakes
Students often think only drinking water matters. Remember — we need clean water for cooking and washing too. Also, rainwater collected from rooftops may not be safe to drink directly without cleaning.
Summary
Water is a precious natural resource. We get it from rain, rivers, wells, and taps. It has many uses in daily life. We must keep water clean and always try to save water so it is available for everyone in the future.
