India is a diverse country where people of different religions, languages, cultures, and traditions live side by side. Living in harmony means getting along peacefully with everyone around us, respecting differences, and caring for our environment.
Harmony in Our Community
A community is a group of people who live in the same area. For a community to be happy and healthy, its members must cooperate and respect one another.
- Ways to live in harmony:
- Respect everyone, regardless of their religion, language, or background.
- Share resources and help those in need.
- Cooperate — work together for the good of everyone.
- Resolve conflicts peacefully — talk, listen, and find solutions without fighting.
In Maya's neighbourhood, families from different religions live on the same street. During Diwali, they all enjoy the lights together. During Eid, they share sweets. During Christmas, everyone enjoys the carols. They celebrate each other's festivals and are good friends.
In Rohan's village, the river was getting polluted. The villagers — farmers, teachers, shopkeepers, and children — all came together to clean the riverbank, plant trees near it, and stop throwing waste into the water. This cooperation helped the whole community.
Harmony with Nature
Living in harmony is not just about getting along with people — it also means taking care of our environment: plants, animals, water, and air.
Lata noticed that the pond near her school had a lot of plastic waste. She organised her classmates to pick up the plastic and put it in proper bins. She also made posters saying "Save Our Pond." Taking care of nature is part of living in harmony.
A forest was being cut near Nikhil's village. Nikhil and the villagers decided to protect the trees by hugging them (just like in the famous Chipko Movement), not allowing the trees to be cut. They knew the forest kept their land green and cool.
Resolving Differences
Sometimes people disagree. The important thing is HOW we handle disagreements.
Two friends, Arush and Deepa, wanted to play different games at recess. Instead of fighting, they agreed to play Arush's game first and then Deepa's game. They compromised and both were happy. This is harmony in action.
Our Responsibilities
- To live in harmony, each of us has duties:
- Do not litter — keep public places clean.
- Do not waste water — close taps after use.
- Be kind and polite to everyone.
- Help those who are in trouble.
- Respect the rules of your home, school, and community.
Common mistakes
Students sometimes think harmony only means not fighting. But true harmony includes actively caring for others, cooperating, appreciating differences, and protecting the environment — not just being quiet or avoiding conflict.

- We can harmonise by respecting, sharing, cooperating, and resolving conflicts peacefully.
