Plants are living things that grow all around us — in gardens, forests, fields, roadsides, and even in water. They are very important for all living things on Earth.
Parts of a Plant
Every plant has several important parts, each with a special job.
- Roots — grow underground, absorb water and minerals from the soil, and hold the plant firmly in place.
- Stem — holds the plant upright and carries water and food to all its parts.
- Leaves — are the food factories of the plant; they make food using sunlight, water, and air in a process called photosynthesis.
- Flowers — are the reproductive parts of a plant; they produce seeds.
- Fruits — form from flowers and contain seeds inside them.
- Seeds — grow into new plants.
Types of Plants
Plants come in different sizes and types.
- Trees — very tall with thick, woody trunks. Example: mango, neem, banyan.
- Shrubs — medium-sized plants with woody stems but smaller than trees. Example: rose, henna.
- Herbs — small, soft-stemmed plants. Example: mint, coriander, tulsi.
- Climbers — plants that climb up walls or supports using their weak stems. Example: money plant, pea plant.
- Creepers — plants that spread along the ground. Example: pumpkin, watermelon.
The mango tree is a tall tree with a thick trunk. It gives us juicy fruit and shade. Its roots go deep into the soil to absorb water.
Mint is an herb. It has soft, green leaves and a strong smell. We use mint leaves to make chutney and flavour drinks. Its stem is soft and cannot stand without support.
The money plant is a climber. It wraps around sticks or walls to grow upward. It can also grow in water, which shows that some plants do not need soil to survive.
A rose bush is a shrub. It has a woody stem with thorns. It produces beautiful flowers in many colours. Thorns protect the plant from animals that might eat it.
What Plants Need to Grow
Plants need sunlight, water, air (carbon dioxide), and minerals from the soil to grow healthily.
Two pots of the same plant were placed indoors. One was kept near a sunny window and watered regularly; it grew well. The other was kept in a dark corner and given no water; it wilted and turned yellow. This shows how important sunlight and water are.
Common mistakes
Many students think all plants have the same kind of stem or leaves. In fact, leaves can be big or small, green or purple, smooth or rough. Not all plants produce fruits — some reproduce differently.
Summary
- Plants have six main parts: roots, stem, leaves, flowers, fruits, and seeds, each with a specific function.
- Plants are classified as trees, shrubs, herbs, climbers, and creepers.
- Plants need sunlight, water, air, and soil minerals to grow.
- Leaves make food for the plant through photosynthesis.
